I Hate Sandy Flats.

I hate Sandy Flats.

Think of your least favorite Mario Kart track. Think about how much you hate it. Multiply that by a thousand.

Try to quantify that. Then realize it still pales in comparison to the hatred I have for Sandy Flats.

While most of the quirks on the different Backyard Baseball fields are fun, Sandy Flats isn’t enjoyable in the slightest. Everyone just runs really slow. If you can hit for power, it’s awfully nice because you can hit it to the open spaces in the outfield, of which there are many. It’s a big outfield. If you drafted the worst possible team and struggle to hit it out of the infield, you’re in trouble.

It did not go well for the Melonheads. Facing the Cubs with an already meager offense, going to Sandy Flats was the absolute worst possible scenario.

The end result?

Two hits. Jocinda Smith singled to lead off the top of the fifth. Gretchen Hasselhoff singled with one out in the sixth and Reese Worthington followed by reaching on an error, but Maria Luna struck out and Lisa Crocket hit into a force out to end the inning.

Lisa fared rather well against Chicago (5-4), striking out 14 while allowing just four hits, but one of those was a Hannah Peavy solo homer in the bottom of the third that bounced off the log serving as the fence down the left field line and carried out. That was the game’s lone run. Cubs pitcher Matessa Sturges went 8 2/3, striking out 10, and she got pulled with two outs and two strikes in the ninth for some reason. I guess the Cubs’ manager really wanted to stop her at exactly 86 pitches. Ryan VanderHoek came in and got Lisa to line out to left to end the game.

WP: Matessa Sturges (3-3) LP: Lisa Crocket (3-2) SV: Ryan VanderHoek (3)

Wild Card standings? Still messed up.

Soccer went much better. We finished off the B Division with a 2-0 win over the Red All-Stars despite a poor first half and a 1-0 win over the Super-Duper Hornets, who were promoted to the A Division along with us. We finished the B Division with 13 wins and one draw.

The degree of difficulty is certainly higher in the A Division. After allowing four goals in 14 B Division games, the A Division was a much stiffer test, with seven goals allowed in five games.

The Melonheads won all of those games, though. 3-2 over the MetroStars, 4-1 over D.C. United, 4-1 over the Spiffy Penguins, 2-1 over the Colorado Rapids and 3-2 over the Scrambling Egg-Headers despite allowing the first two goals. Marky Dubois drew us within one before halftime off a steal, Kiesha Phillips scored just after the break and Jocinda Smith scored for the lead a minute later.

Come hang out on Twitch next time!
